Super Subs Are Great For Parties Sandwiches come in all shapes and sizes. By Curtis Schmidt

The Super Bowl always produces super spreads of food, and the super seller on the deli scene is the super sub.
We're talking abut the three-foot to six-foot versions and anything in between. And at Vinny's Italian Market & Deli, it also includes super subs in a variety of creative shapes - such as the numbers of your favorites players in the Super Bowl.

Since this is Super Bowl XLI (or 41) super subs in the roman numerals or regular numbers are very popular according to Vinny LoVullo, who runs the deli in the Apple Valley Shopping Center on Rt. 55 in LaGrange.
Vinny says that straight numbers are easier to handle, but he does have cuts of bread in circles so he can also handle the 3, 5, 6, 8 and 9 shapes. "It takes a little more work, but it's a lot of fun and we get to use our creativity with it," he said. And while most of the orders for these super subs come for Super Bowl Sunday, Vinny says the sandwiches are also very popular for birthday parties (in the shape of the persons age), family dinner and even corporate meetings and lunches.

Looks and sizes aside, the super subs are really about great eating in an easy-to-handle style. We have some basic favorites when it comes to ingredients, but people really love them because they can always cut them the size they want to eat," Vinny said. In most cases, a six-foot sub will feed 20-25 persons.

Vinny serves super subs with American and/or Italian style cold cuts, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and mayonnaise, oil and vinegar or mustard on the side.

"The real key to these sandwiches is the freshness," said Vinny. "we always prepare them on the day they are to be served and the meat goes directly from the slicer to the bread. You also want to have the condiments on the side, so it doesn't get soggy."
Vinny's Italian Market & Deli also serves a couple of specials with the super subs. These include the "Godfather" with a variety of Italian meats including sopressatta and prosciuto and provolone cheese and the Chicken Cutlet, which adds mozzarella cheese, roasted red peppers and mixed greens.

Vinny's super subs also come with potato or pasta salad, drinks and chips. "It really makes a great meal," he said.

Vinny's Italian Market: TheTaste Of Sicily

There's a little bit of Sicily in every bite at Vinny's Italian Market.

For Vinny LoVullo, its all about authentic family recipes and personal service. He takes real care in making sure his market in the Apple Valley Chopping Center on Rt. 55 provides both every day. The authentic recipes come from his mother and grandmother, who came to america from Canicatti, Sicily in the mid-1960's. The personal service Vinny and his family wouldn't have it any other way.

This is a "from scratch" family operation, with plenty of family history to back it up. Vinny's mother, Colomba (everyone calls her Mimi) and father, Calogero (they all call him Charlie) were both born and raised in Canicatti, but met and were married in The Bronx. Grandmother Maria Lasardo is also on the scene in the market along with Vinny's sister Margaret, making it a true family operation.

"Thats what you get when you come to our market - we made it from scratch and we stick to the old family recipes" says Vinny.
Some of those authentic items include sausage, all the salads, homemade soups, chicken cutlets, breaded eggplants, and of course, Moma's meatballs. For a truly unique flavor of the old country, try the rich rice balls, made from rice, ground beef, mozzarella cheese and peas and then breaded and deep fried.

Vinny's also imports many products from Italy including sharp provolone, parmesan reggiano cheeses and pannettone fruitcakes for the holidays.

Speaking of the holidays, Vinny's caters to both corporate and family parties. A typical menu would include an anti-pasta platter, a large tray of fresh mozzarella cheese with tomatoes and basil, penne ala vodka, Chicken Francaise or Florentine, sausage and peppers and meatballs.

On a daily basis, Vinny's serves breakfast and lunch with traditional sandwiches, subs, wraps, pizza and bruschetta.
So, if family recipes and family service are what you want, then Vinny's Italian Market is the place for you. Call Vinny's at 483-9600 or visit the website at www.vinnysitalianmarket.com
